Meiosis: Or, It Takes Two To Tango (Usually)

7/23/2017

Picture
In a previous article we covered the subject of mitosis, or cell reproduction into exact copies of itself. But what if we need a little variation in the next generation? What if there are advantages that only separate individual organisms, combining their genetic materials can provide?

Before we explain the "why" (in a later article, of course), we must first address the "how"...

Vaccination: Why Everyone Should Have It

7/9/2017

Picture
Some of you might have come across articles that vaccinations are a scam, or they contain poisons which will harm children in whatever manner. But before you buy into these claims, do you know what they are? The reasoning behind them? The biological mechanism that makes them work?

One of the principles behind science is to understand, rather than fear things we don't know. So lets get you educated on the topic.

Klein Bottle: Pouring Into Alien Geometries

7/1/2017

Picture
Remember when we used to dabble with alien geometries? IFSA is going back to our roots (which was planted in our first article about our logo), and this time we're tackling a cousin of that nefarious Mobius strip...

Molecular Orbitals: More Physics In Your Chemistry

6/24/2017

Picture
In a previous article, we had mentioned that instead of the popular picture of an electron orbiting a nucleus, the atomic nuclei is actually surrounded by a cloud of its probable positions. Similarly, our popular picture of molecules composed of shared electron orbits are similarly false.

Yes, we know it's weird, but that's what you get when chemistry gets physic-y...

Ball Bearings: Battling Friction

6/16/2017

Picture
There are few things in this world that are as simple as they are crucial to our civilisation; and these things exist as a solution to an old problem. To fight gravity, we have pulleys;  for multiplying force we use levers; and so on...

But in our modern times, the vexing problem of friction are the things that keeps engineers awake at night. And a very simple tool that have not essentially changed in centuries are the best things we have to keep it at bay...
