If last year we were given the big news of the discovery of gravitational waves, 2017 might carry one that beats that by a large margin: the synthesis of metallic hydrogen

Ever wonder why a clean and tidy room is hard to maintain? Though not exactly related, a messy room is analogous to how the universe treats itself - in a constant, continuous, and unavoidable decay of order.

But what does all this have to do with chemistry?

Look at yourself. Are you the product of nature or nurture? Sometimes it may be both, especially for things like food. The stuff we eat are as alien to nature as we are to our ancestors. We had purposely bred crops and animals to carry on traits that are beneficial to us: fatter chickens, sweeter fruits, greater yielding grains, for instance. All of these are impossible without an understanding of heredity...

Since the launch of IFSA one year ago we have had the photo of the Space Shuttle on our landing page. Of course, we are not denying that this piece of engineering marvel is now permanently retired, but it’s supposed to embody the hope that we have for IFSA itself: aim high.

So it’s been a year. Clearly, we must do something to commemorate this event. But what? How about we take some inspiration from our landing page and look at space ships in orbit and consider the energy required to put them there? With MATHS, and GRAPHS! *drool*...
