Analogue Computers: The PC's Forgotten Cousin

9/3/2016

Picture
We have taken much of the things in our life for granted, and the pursuit for the latest and greatest makes us forget how we even got to where we are. The computer being one of them, many of us had assumed that prior to the 1980s, the world was in the tech equivalent of the stone age, but not so.

Similar to our article on the analogue calculator, in this article we shall go back to the time when simple gears and clockwork perform the most amazing tasks. And we'll see how we might one day go back to that.

"Mamihlapinatapei" by Rachael K. Jones

8/26/2016

Picture
Mamihlapinatapei is a short story on the possible future where long extinct species were brought back. It tells a story of Marta, a Chilean of Yaghan ancestry, and fits the irony of her job in a world where extinct creatures were brought back, while minority cultures are becoming more and more endangered.

There's so much irony in this story, the ancient Greeks would appreciate it.

Redox Reactions: Chemical Energy in Action

How does one release chemical energy? Obviously the fuel needs to change on a molecular level, very much like atomic fission and fusion, but on a slightly larger scale.

But what had changed in the chemical structure, and how?

Plant Cells: Our Green Cousins

7/28/2016

Picture
Plants and animals may have split off to form different branches of the evolutionary tree eons ago, but we still share alot of similarities. For example both our cells and that of our green cousins are eukaryotic (refer to previous article).

But this article will highlight the differences, not just for convenience, but due to their different needs and functions.

The Mechanical Calculator: Engineering’s Contribution to Mathematics

7/20/2016

Picture
Engineering has always been seen as the application of mathematics. Since the time of Archimedes to Galileo this relationship appears to be a one way street. But as they say, necessity is the mother of invention, and as mathematics became more and more complex, we require better tools to handle the more mundane aspects of it.

This is when application turns back to help formulate theories.
