Hidden Figures: A History Of Women In Science

6/3/2017

Picture
At its surface, the 2016 film Hidden Figures seems to tell the story of the trials and tribulations of three African American women faced while working at NASA in the early days of the Space Race. But the film is more relevant now as the issue of women in science, in general, is still a matter they have yet to be addressed adequately.

This article is an attempt to put into perspective of how women have shaped science and human civilization throughout history.

The world's population keeps growing, and only recently have we hit the 7 billion mark. It doesn't take a genius to deduce that we need to squeeze ever more food from a finite pool of arable lands to feed greater and greater numbers of people. But can we do this? And how would the world be if we were to fail?

Matthew Amati's supershort story tells of a typical family in a post-abundance world, where food is so scarce and precious, they come with names...

In the 19th century much of what we know now about the universe are pretty much wild guesses. Most of these guesses are based on hypothetical mathematics which barely fit into what was observable then.

Such is the life of mathematician and physicist Henri Poincare, who postulated a conjencture that puzzles mathematicians and cosmologists for almost a century.

Mitosis: How Cells Go Forth And Multiply

5/13/2017

In the simplest manner, we are just a bundle of cells, trillions of cells. But we all came about from the joining of only two from our parents. The math proves how rapid this process is, but rapid does not necessarily mean quick and simple.

As you will learn, this is a very complicated process, and a very important one...

Chemical Polarity: A Little Bit Of Physics In Your Chemistry

5/7/2017

Picture
As we delve into chemistry, we found that certain concepts in physics are ever present. Chemistry is not just about mixing compound A and B to produce C, but how and why these thing happen.

In this article we explain how electrical charges (a familiar concept in physics) actually makes chemistry work.
