"Love and Relativity" by Stewart C. Baker

6/17/2016

Picture
Love and Relativity is an epistolary short story being read from the perspective of a long lost husband and father, on his wife's despairs and his daughter's journey to find him. It's a good estimation on the consequences of the paradoxes brought on by Einstein's theory of Special Relativity.

Maybe love, just like timespace, transcends human understanding.

"The Heresy of Friar Travolo" by J. S. Bangs

"The Heresy of Friar Travolo" can be seen as how new, paradigm-shifting ideas may be treated by unprepared minds. In the guise of breaking one of mathematics' fundamental laws, the story attempts to show how too much caution may lead to stagnant thinking, or the avoidance of thinking itself.

Learn from this cautionary tale, and apply the lessons in your every thought.

"Foreign Tongues" by John Wiswell

"Foreign Tongues" is a humorous, albeit dark, short story on the contextual difficuylties in communication. Anthropologists call this the 'outside context problem', in which communication is impossible due to diverging developments between civilisations; and severe miscommunication is likely. This problem arises between humans and the other species on the planet, and had probably contributed to the state of the natural world today.

But what if such things were to happen to us, with us being the 'other species' instead?

"Our Universe Beats Like a Heart" by Samuel Illingworth

So a big news came out of the world of physics recently: gravitational waves have been detected. The implications are massive in terms of how we view the fabric of spacetime (it's more like a pool of water than some stretchy 'fabric').

As a tribute, we're not going for the usual article, but a poetic ode. Something this beautiful demands it.

"Fibonacci" by Eleanor R. Wood

A string of numbers. They can mean something, or nothing. They can guide us to patterns in nature, or drive a mathematician to the brink of his or her sanity.

Eleanor Wood's "Fibonacci" is a story that even non-mathematicians can appreciate. It tells of the sting of failure, and the exhilarating atmosphere of success.
